Discussing Life Changes

Cover your roof…and everything under it

You’ve signed the papers, written the checks, transferred the titles and collected the keys. It may not be your dream house, but it’s all yours.

So, now what? Now, you protect your investment.

Insuring your home often raises a number of touchy subjects that many would rather avoid than discuss in the open. It involves money, the value of personal items and the extent of coverage you’ll need even when you’re almost certain nothing will ever happen. Just picking a number that sounds good and running with it isn’t going to work for you over the long run. In fact, it may cause you big problems if you ever suffer a loss.

Nobody wants to choose between saving a buck and proper protection, but because many feel insurance is “too confusing,” they don’t want to talk about it beyond getting a policy and getting on with their lives.

The ability to discuss your needs will go a long way in providing you peace of mind when it comes to protecting one of your biggest investments.

Consider these tips to get the conversation going:

  • Understand that insurance is a “must.” You can debate how much insurance you need and who will provide it for a year and a day but, if you own a house, you can’t live without insurance and your mortgage company probably requires it.
  • Know that a professional can help. You don’t have to go it alone. Finding a local insurance agent can give you an easy resource to understanding insurance. The Internet also has a virtually endless supply of information to help you understand how insurance works and where to get it.
  • Your situation may help you save money. Depending on where you are in life, you might be eligible for discounts that can cut your insurance costs. Many times you can get a discount for having a homeowners policy and an auto policy with the same company. You can also find discounts for multiple cars, experienced drivers, good loss history and more that help you lower your overall insurance expenses.
  • Knowledge is power. You may not be an insurance professional. You may never become one. But the more you know about what you have and how to protect it, the more likely you’ll be to make good insurance decisions. Advice from friends and family is helpful to some extent, but gaining the knowledge to work as a partner in protecting your home and the other things in life you value is irreplaceable.

So get talking. Take the time needed to protect your home the way it should be so that if something happens, you’ll know that you’re covered inside and out.
